BATSMAN Angelo Mathews will return to action in Sri Lanka’s test series against South Africa later this month.
Mathews, who has been sidelined with leg injuries since August, was named as captain when the Lankans announced their squad in Colombo on Thursday.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal is also back, having recovered from a broken hand.
The only surprise was the inclusion of uncapped fast bowler Vikum Sanjaya, 24, a former Sri Lanka under-19 player who has taken 38 wickets in his 17 first-class matches and reportedly cracked the nod thanks to his wicked away-swinger.
Sanjaya is one of five frontline seamers picked, but the selectors saved a place for Rangana Herath – the slow left-armer who took match figures of 9/128 at Kingsmead in December 2011 to bowl Sri Lanka to their only win among the 10 tests they have played in South Africa.
The three-match series starts at St George’s Park on December 26.
Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (captain), Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Dhananjaya de Silva, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Kumara, Vikum Sanjaya, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera, Rangana Herath.
