TELFORD VICE, Cape Town

STEVE Smith, who was rested during Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka in August, will return to action in SA this month.

Smith will captain the Australians in a one-day international against Ireland in Benoni on September 27, which will be followed by five matches in the format against SA.

Australia’s batting will benefit from the addition of a player who has scored half-centuries in four of his last six ODI innings.

But their pace bowling will be weakened by the resting of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

In their place Australia have picked an uncapped trio of Daniel Worrall, Joe Mennie and Chris Tremain.

“Chris, Joe and Daniel all had terrific summers last year and have also impressed us during the recent Australia A series with consistent performances,” selection chairman Rod Marsh said in a release.

“They are young players with a bright future who thoroughly deserve their selection and we look forward to seeing them work with (fast bowlers) John Hastings and Scott Boland, who have both performed well for Australia since returning from injury.”

Usman Khawaja, Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon were the casualties from the squad that beat Sri Lanka 4-1 in their ODI series.

Aaron Finch cracked the nod despite breaking a finger in Australia’s last ODI in Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Australia ODI squad: Steven Smith (captain), David Warner, George Bailey, Scott Boland, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Joe Mennie, Chris Tremain, Matthew Wade, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa.
